What?
The New Visions Earth Science Curriculum Pilot focuses on the development and implementation of a Common Core and New York State Regents aligned scope and sequence for a high school Earth Science course. |
|
How?- On-site coaching two to four times a month to develop an evidence-based practice that involves looking at student work to determine instructional moves as well as consistent and rigorous use of literacy strategies to build content and skill mastery
- Three 2015-2016 cross-network PDs to introduce teachers to literacy and content understanding strategies as well as to provide an opportunity to discuss their progress with the curriculum
- Curriculum Institute in the Summer of 2015
- Digital support through Google + communities where teachers will be able to communicate with pilot colleagues, ask questions about the curriculum, and watch archived coaching videos
|
|
|
Why?
- Demands of new Common Core aligned assessments require that literacy skills are addressed throughout all content areas.
- The Earth Science course culminates in a required Regents exam and can serve as a core skill building course that supports access to even more rigorous science courses
- Teachers can spend more time focusing on how to teach and less time researching what to teach
- Crowd-sourced solutions to common problems in both literacy and content
- Excellent PD opportunities in a community of practice for often isolated teachers
- Opportunity to develop leadership skills and norm on how NVPS teaches Earth Science and develops cohesive curricula
